DESCRIPTION

Cucamelon (also called mouse melon or Mexican sour gherkin) is a vigorous climbing plant that quickly covers a support and produces lots of small, crunchy fruits. The fruits look like tiny watermelons and are best enjoyed fresh in salads, as a snack, or pickled.

For best results in cooler climates, start seeds indoors in March–April and give seedlings warmth and light. Transplant outdoors or into a greenhouse in May–June once nights are reliably mild. Provide a trellis, full sun, and evenly moist, well-drained soil (avoid waterlogging). Harvest often and pick fruits young at about 2–3 cm to keep the flavour crisp and the plant productive for longer.
