A beautiful golden-fleshed beet variety that adds something a little different to both the garden and the kitchen. Burpee’s Golden has a mild, sweet flavor and is well suited for roasting, boiling, oven dishes, and fresh salads. Its warm orange-gold color and gentle taste make it especially appealing.

Burpee’s Golden is an heirloom variety described by Burpee as a 1940s selection. The roots mature in about 55 days, are typically around 2 inches in size, and the variety is intended for direct sowing.

It is a great choice for gardeners who want a lighter-colored alternative to classic red beetroot without giving up sweetness or kitchen versatility. Once cooked, the flesh keeps its attractive golden tone and looks beautiful in everyday meals as well as more decorative vegetable dishes.

Sowing instructions

Sow beet seeds directly outdoors, as beetroot generally does not prefer transplanting. Burpee also lists direct sow as the sowing method for Burpee’s Golden. Harvest can be expected in about 55 days.

Sow when the soil has warmed to around 45°F / 7°C or above. Beet seeds generally germinate in temperatures of about 50–85°F / 10–29°C, and they perform best in cool growing conditions.

Sowing depth: about ½–¾ inch / 1–2 cm
Spacing in row: about 1 inch / 2.5 cm
Row spacing: about 12–18 inches / 30–45 cm

Thin seedlings once they are established, as each seed cluster may produce several plants. Leave about 3–4 inches / 7–10 cm between plants for proper root development.

Beets grow best in full sun and light, loose, well-drained soil. Keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season, as inconsistent watering can reduce root quality and size.

For a longer harvest season, sow in smaller batches every couple of weeks instead of planting everything at once.
