DESCRIPTION

‘Early Summer Crookneck’ is loved for its exceptional flavour and continuous production. The butter-yellow fruits are at their best when harvested young—tender, sweet, and easy to cook in almost anything.

Harvest frequently and the plant will keep producing for weeks. It’s a reliable choice for gardeners who want high yields without fuss, plus a squash that tastes noticeably better than typical store-bought greens and veg.

GROWING GUIDE

  • Site: full sun, sheltered from strong winds

  • Soil: well-drained and rich in humus (the richer, the better)

  • For an early start (late March):

    • sow one seed per 3-inch pot, placed edgeways

    • sow depth: ½ inch (about 1–1.5 cm)

    • keep soil temperature at least 65°F (18°C) until germination (warmer is even better)

  • Plant out: after the last frost

  • Direct sow outdoors: from mid-May once soil is warm and frost risk is over

  • Water: keep soil consistently moist; water around the plant, not over the leaves

  • Weeding: keep weed-free to improve air circulation

  • Feeding: once fruiting starts, feed every 14 days with a tomato-type fertiliser

  • Harvest: pick at 5–6 inches and harvest often for continuous cropping

FAQ

When should I harvest for best taste?
At 5–6 inches (12–15 cm). Frequent picking keeps fruits tender and plants productive.

Is it suitable for smaller gardens?
Yes—bush plants stay compact, but still need enough width (3–4 ft) for airflow and yield.

Why does soil temperature matter so much for germination?
These seeds need steady warmth to sprout quickly and evenly—cool soil delays or reduces germination.

How do I keep it producing all season?
Harvest regularly, keep moisture steady, and feed every two weeks once fruiting begins.
