Florence fennel is grown primarily for its fleshy bulb, which has a delicious aniseed flavour, although the leaves can be utilised. We believe this to be the best variety only growing 2-3 ft tall, which makes it an ideal candidate for smaller gardens. The Bulb can be steamed or boiled and served with a creamy sauce or used raw in salads. This is not the same as Common Fennel grown purely for its leaves.
  • Sow in mid spring to late summer in shallow drills 18 inches apart.

  • As the seedlings become large enough to handle thin them to 8 inches between each plant.

  • It is best to sow Florence fennel seeds successively in small quantities.

  • Keep the plants well watered.

  • When the bulbs begin to swell to about 2 inches in diameter, earth them up.

  • Cut and use Florence fennel about 3 weeks after earthing up.
