DESCRIPTION

Tomato Rio Grande is a reliable bush tomato valued for its heavy harvest and “workhorse” fruits. The plum-shaped tomatoes are firm, hold up well, and are less likely to crack when conditions fluctuate — making it especially practical for outdoor growing and larger harvests.

Start seeds indoors in late March or early April. Keep warm (18–20 °C) and evenly moist. Once seedlings emerge, remove any cover and give maximum light. Prick out the strongest plants into individual pots and plant them a little deeper to encourage a strong root system.

When planting out, don’t overcrowd — about 40 cm spacing improves airflow and reduces disease pressure. Provide support (stake or cage), water steadily without overwatering, and ventilate well if grown in a greenhouse.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is it determinate (bush) or indeterminate (tall)?
Rio Grande is determinate (bush).

Can I grow it outdoors in Northern Europe?
Yes, in a warm, sunny spot. A greenhouse is more reliable, but this variety performs well outdoors thanks to firm fruits.

Does it crack easily?
No — it’s highly crack-resistant and the fruits are very firm.

Do I need to remove many suckers?
Usually less pruning than indeterminate tomatoes. Remove only what makes the plant too dense and keep lower leaves tidy for airflow.

When should I start seeds for an unheated greenhouse or balcony?
Late March to early April works best.

What does Demeter mean?
Demeter is a biodynamic certification, typically with stricter standards than basic organic rules.
