Basil, Italiano Classico, is the classic sweet Genovese basil and happens to be Franchi's most renowned variety. This particular strain gained global fame as the basil behind the renowned pesto. It is named Italian Classic instead of Genovese due to the Indicazione Geografica Protetta (IGP) trademark granted to the Genoa region. This trademark restricts the use of the name Genovese exclusively to basil grown in a specific area of Liguria. Consequently, although the seed is cultivated elsewhere in Italy, it cannot be labeled as Genovese within the country.

Regardless of nomenclature, this basil stands out as the finest choice. It serves as the quintessential basil for sauces, pesto, pizza, and a myriad of culinary applications. The leaves are soft, fragrant, and possess a delightful taste. This variety produces the most vibrant green pesto, capturing the admiration of many chefs. When sowing, distribute the seeds sparingly and cover them lightly with fine soil. Gently press down the soil and maintain consistent moisture. Sow directly in the designated area or in pots. Italiano Classico prefers rich, well-drained soil and thrives in a warm, sheltered location. Once the plants are larger, thin them to 6 inches apart. Pinch the first or second set of leaves to encourage the growth of additional shoots. Plant from early spring to late summer, or year-round in warm regions. In cooler climates, provide protection with a plastic or hay bale windbreak.
