A wonderful aromatic oriental herb, beautiful purple-green leaves and a milder flavor than Sweet Basil. Most commonly used in Vietnamese and Thai cooking. Makes an excellent potted herb and can be grown successfully indoors or outdoors. Prefers warm conditions and full sun. Height up to 40cm.

 

In Asian cuisine, Thai basil stands out as an indispensable, anise-infused variety, cultivated on a petite plant that boasts both aesthetic charm and culinary significance. This basil variation, renowned for its intense flavor and distinctive appearance, offers a more concentrated and spicy taste compared to its more familiar counterpart, accompanied by hints of anise and licorice. Featuring smaller, slender, pointed leaves, as well as deep purple flowers and stems, Thai basil not only adds a striking visual element but also excels in dishes like Thai green and red curries and stir-fries, showcasing resilience even in extended cooking processes.

 

Sow in trays in April or March , maintain an ideal temperature of 55-60F.

Sow in well-drained compost, cover the seed with compost, Light is beneficial to germination. Germination usually takes 20 days.

Transplant seedlings when large enough.

Harden off and plant out 25 cm apart when all risk of frost is gone.

A well-drained soil is sutable. Can also be grown on a sunny windowsill.
