Chives are a nutrient-dense food. This means they are low in calories but high in beneficial nutrients like vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. One of the most popular culinary herbs. Provides 3 percent of the daily value of both vitamins A and C.

Narrow, grass-like leaves, mild onion-like flavour. Chives are part of the allium family of vegetables and herbs. Decorative in full bloom. Use  leaves in salads, egg cuisines, potatoe dishes, casseroles, soups, stews. Young flower blossoms can be used as edible garnish or marinated. Cut leaves quickly grow back. Freezes well in containers or plastic bags. Easy to grow.

Sow thinly in pots indoors from March for the earliest start. Cover with ¼ inch of fine compost. Keep soil moderately moist during germination.

Sow outdoors after all danger of frost has passed through to September. 

When large enough to handle, thin to 12-18 inches apart.

Can be harvested continuously. Harvest before flowering.  Snip leaves at the base of the plant to encourage growth.  Leaves can also be dried for later use.   
Plants can also be grown indoors on a windowsill during the winter months.
